Family, friends, colleagues, and members of the California Faculty Association (CFA) are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Billy Gallagher, who passed away following a tragic accident in Pomona, California.
According to the California Faculty Association, Billy, who served as the field representative for the CFA Pomona chapter, died after a tragic accident that occurred near the California State University Chancellor’s Office on Tuesday, July 21. His passing has left the union, faculty members, and the broader academic community grieving the loss of a respected advocate and dedicated colleague.
Billy devoted his career to supporting faculty and strengthening the labor movement. At Cal Poly Pomona, he was known as someone who could always be counted on—whether assisting members with grievances, organizing campaigns, or providing quiet encouragement and guidance to colleagues and faculty alike. His unwavering commitment to protecting faculty rights and advancing the mission of the California Faculty Association earned him the respect and admiration of everyone who had the privilege of working alongside him.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Billy is remembered as a man of deep conviction, authenticity, and compassion. Friends describe him as someone who cared deeply about people and stood firmly beside those who needed support. His friendships were marked by honesty, loyalty, and countless shared moments of laughter and resilience. He believed in standing up for the underdog and devoted much of his life to helping others.
Billy’s greatest joy was his family. He loved his daughters, Katie and Claire, beyond measure, and was a devoted husband to Angela Gallagher. Loved ones have also found comfort in remembering that he is now reunited with his sister, Kristen, who passed away last year.
The California Faculty Association paid tribute to Billy’s life and service, remembering him as someone who always “showed up” for faculty, colleagues, and the labor movement. His dedication, kindness, and unwavering support left a lasting impact that will not be forgotten.
As family, friends, coworkers, and union members continue to mourn, heartfelt condolences are extended to Angela, Katie, Claire, William, the Gallagher family, and all who loved him.
